Frequently Asked Questions
What Religion is The Urantia Book
The Urantia Book embraces the Christian, Jain and Jew, Muslim and Mormon, Baha’i and Buddhist, and many others.
Yet it is not any of their corresponding religions. And neither is it its own religion.
So what is it?
The Urantia Book Is about the God of All Religions
God is front and center of The Urantia Book’s entire narrative.
The book describes God, the Creator, in great depth and detail. It explains the reality and personality of God and tells us a lot about the Creator’s nature and attributes.
People of all religions will be inspired by the beauty and goodness of God’s character as conveyed by The Urantia Book. They will recognize the truths of the book’s depiction of the source of reality as imparted by their own religion.
Yet the book is not another bible. And you don’t even have to be a member of a religion to derive great spiritual benefit from it.
What Kind of Religion Does The Urantia Book Promote?
The book’s messages center around the idea of personal religion.
Personal religion is essentially about our relationship with God. The book teaches that God embraces each individual with an infinite and personal love.
This places each and every one of us in a personal relationship with God, as a son or daughter in a universal family. The book’s core message is that God is close to each individual, and each person can grow closer to God by their own spiritual efforts.
It is this one-to-one experience of the bond with our Creator that The Urantia Book focuses on. One of the book’s central tenets is that this relationship can be fostered by sharing our inner life with God, regardless of background, religion, or path in life.
Our relationship with God can be nurtured within the beliefs and rituals of traditional religion, or quite independently of a structured faith or spiritual text.
Is The Urantia Book Against Religion?
Not at all. The Urantia Book speaks of the crucial role that traditional and organized religions have played in humankind’s approach to God throughout the ages. The book identifies some of these religions’ best qualities and celebrates the similarity of their supreme principles.
However, it does caution against becoming imprisoned by the rigid dogmas and unbending beliefs of what it calls the “religions of authority.”
As institutionalized religions have evolved over the centuries, many of their tenets may have become fossilized and restrictive to those who seek inner spiritual progress.
The Urantia Book advocates a balance between preserving the highest values from past traditions and following the trustworthy guidance of the spirit within each of us.
Aren’t the Organizations That Promote The Urantia Book Like a Religion?
Far from it.
Several organizations have sprung up around The Urantia Book since it was first printed in 1955. The two major ones are The Urantia Book Fellowship and Urantia Foundation.
The Urantia Book Fellowship’s primary purpose is to help readers understand the content of The Urantia Book, whether individually or in groups.
Those who use these organizations’ services hail from many different religions or from none at all. No restrictions or views are ever imposed on those who study the book.
The Urantia Book Fellowship encourages group study and discussion, holds meetings and conferences for its members, and supports several other initiatives aimed at sharing the book’s content.
Many find the book has helped them understand God much better and has given them an expanded view of life and an enhanced sense of purpose.
