    Two-Minute Takeaways

    Our Evolutionary Nature

Two-Minute Takeaways from The Urantia Book

Just as a butterfly emerges from the caterpillar stage, so will the true personalities of human beings emerge on the [spirit] worlds, for the first time revealed apart from their onetime enshroudment in the material flesh. (112:6.1)

    Caterpillar to Butterfly Transformation

Even the most careful scientific examination can never reveal that the homely caterpillar would transform into a beautiful, graceful butterfly. Observing the caterpillar alone gives no hint of the creature’s wondrous destiny.

The same is true for humans.

    Evolution as Transformation

Evolution is a technique that deity employs to produce progressive change.  It is a tool to ensure progress. Change is occurring constantly on all material levels. Characteristics that enhance survival tend to persist and become the norm. Evolution works by testing change against experience.

While science has not identified the rules of evolution in the spiritual realm, we can intuit that we have the potential to become much more than we are. This is a conviction we cannot escape. We may sometimes doubt its validity, but eventually the idea springs up again. This innate conviction suggests that our spiritual self already exists and is advancing toward a goal of moral and ethical goodness.

    Spiritual Transformation in Each Person

Each of us participates in our spiritual transformation by our individual choices for goodness, beauty and truth.

The Urantia Book reveals that evolution is no accident. It explains the function of evolution and the reasons deity has for using evolution to produce progress.  An important part of God’s plan is to use time, space, and evolution to transform men and women into spirit beings.

As a result of our positive, loving choices, each individual soul evolves, thereby affecting the evolution of the whole of humanity as well.

    Path to Global Transformation

Love and service on a large scale have not been seriously tried on our planet. When individuals choose to love and freely serve others consistently through hard and easy times, experience will prove these choices to be transformative. Already this is observable in the sense of purpose and satisfaction that selfless service of others provides us.

Evolving into a culture of loving and serving is likely to require a long span of time and patience. Nevertheless, through God’s marvelous process of evolution, we will inevitably progress toward a time of truth, goodness, and peace.

The long-drawn-out evolutionary processes of peoples, planets, and universes are under the perfect control of the universe creators and administrators and unfold in accordance with the eternal purpose of the Universal Father, proceeding in harmony and order and in keeping with the all-wise plan of God.
